Hello future moms!
My name is Angela, and you can find me on Instagram as @vagamondangi. I am Pietro's mother, a "little explorer" who is almost two years old, and I am now expecting another little travel companion. I love traveling with my family, especially on weekends, and sharing tips that can be useful to other moms like me: from day trips to longer journeys, from fun activities to family-friendly accommodations.
Traveling during pregnancy is a unique and unforgettable experience. Choosing the right clothing can make a big difference in making your trip more comfortable and enjoyable. Here are some practical tips based on my experience and what I have found useful when traveling with a baby bump.
First of all, it is essential to talk to your doctor. He or she knows your situation better than anyone else and can give you the most appropriate advice for you and your baby. Sometimes, a simple reassurance can make you feel more at ease
If you are traveling by plane or boat in the last trimester, remember to request a medical certificate from your gynecologist to travel safely.
Personally, I found the second trimester to be the ideal time to travel. The nausea is generally gone, and you feel full of energy. It's the perfect time to explore new places and create special memories.
Comfort is absolutely my top priority. The ideal choice is to opt for maternity clothes that are soft, stretchy, and breathable, gently hugging the belly. Natural fabrics like cotton are great because they don't irritate the skin and help maintain a comfortable body temperature. Additionally, a maternity dress has technical features that support your body as your belly grows. A long, fresh dress can be an excellent choice: elegant and comfortable at the same time. Don't forget a travel pillow for back support and comfortable shoes!
I can't emphasize enough the importance of shoes. They should be easy to put on and take off: slippers, ballet flats, or lightweight sneakers are my favorites. During travel, your feet can swell, so I recommend choosing shoes that offer a bit of extra room. Additionally, bringing a light scarf is always a good idea: it can be used as a blanket, an improvised pillow, or simply to add a touch of style to your outfit.
Invest in maternity underwear that offers support and comfort. Wireless bras and panties with an elastic band under the belly can make a big difference in keeping you comfortable throughout the trip. Always carry a change of clothes in your backpack or carry-on. You never know what might happen during the trip, and having a change of clothes on hand can save you in unforeseen situations. I always have a comfortable dress and an extra shirt with me.
Traveling often means dealing with temperature changes, especially on airplanes. I like to dress in layers, wearing a tank top or a light shirt under a cardigan or a soft jacket. This way, I can easily add or remove layers as needed.
During pregnancy, high-waisted pants with an elastic band over the belly are a real lifesaver. I feel supported without being compressed. Maternity leggings are perfect for traveling: comfortable, practical, and easy to pair with tunics or long shirts. Of course, it also depends on the season.
Stay active, hydrated, and nourished. Dried fruit, whole-grain crackers, and energy bars always help me keep my energy up. Additionally, bringing a good book, my favorite music, or using a meditation app helps me relax and enjoy the trip. Every little consideration can be significant.
Traveling during pregnancy requires a bit more planning, but with the right clothing, you can feel comfortable and beautiful wherever you go.
I hope these tips are useful to you and that you can make the most of every moment of your trip, whether you are exploring new destinations or visiting loved ones. And remember that while young children may not remember all the experiences and trips made in their early years (or even from their time in the womb), they will certainly carry those experiences with them, helping to shape their independent, confident, and curious character as they discover every corner of the world.
Have a great trip and enjoy every moment of this wonderful adventure!
